Introducing The Sociology Club
Welcome to The Sociology Club
Exploring Society, Empowering Community
The Sociology Club at Portland State University is a grassroots, student-driven space for connection and collective insight. We bring together people who want to understand the social world and who believe that knowledge and community can fuel meaningful change.
Our mission echoes the spirit of the PSU Sociology Department: working collaboratively, thinking critically, and engaging with the world in ways that promote equity, justice, and solidarity. We build from the department’s strengths in social research, structural analysis, and community engagement, and we create space for students, alumni, faculty, and friends to be in conversation across complex experiences and identities.
Whether you’re an undergraduate sociology major, a sociology graduate student, a student from another discipline, or simply someone who enjoys asking big questions about power, inequality, culture, and community, you’re welcome here.
We encourage you to carefully review our community agreements
What We Do
Our gatherings and projects are designed to spark insight, deepen connection, and expand what sociology can look like in practice.
Community & Connection
We create brave, welcoming spaces for dialogue, collaboration, and mutual support. Expect thoughtful conversations, new friendships, and the joy of being in community with people who want to understand the world in all its complexity.
Exploration & Learning
We read, discuss, watch, listen, research, and question. From media analysis and current events to theory discussions and student-led workshops, our approach blends intellectual curiosity with accessible, conversational learning.
Social Justice & Collective Action
Sociology at PSU is rooted in equity and social transformation — we extend that legacy through small-scale, student-driven projects, volunteer efforts, solidarity campaigns, and collaborations around issues that matter to our community.
Professional Growth & Mentorship
We share resources on navigating the major, research opportunities, grad school questions, career pathways, and connecting with PSU Sociology’s faculty and community partners. Think peer support, not formal advising — grounded in real experience.
Our Values
● Curiosity — We ask questions that matter.
● Justice — We challenge inequality in all its forms.
● Community — We practice care, accountability, and connection.
● Collaboration — We learn with each other, not from hierarchies.
● Imagination — We believe a better world is possible — and sociologically knowable.
Who Can Join?
Anyone. Majors, minors, undecided students, grad students, alumni, and the sociologically curious. If you’re interested in people, systems, power, culture, or the everyday strangeness of social life — you’ll find a home here.
Why We Exist
PSU Sociology is internationally recognized for its leadership in social justice and community-engaged scholarship. Our club builds on that foundation by giving students a flexible, informal, peer-led place to connect, reflect, and explore sociology outside the classroom.
In a department known for accessible faculty, robust research opportunities, community-centered teaching, and a commitment to understanding (and transforming) the world, we offer a complementary space shaped by student energy, creativity, and care.
Get Involved
Whether you want to attend an event, help plan discussions, collaborate on a project, or just hang out and think sociologically with other humans — we’d love to have you.
